CHAPTER 12

By nine o’clock, the festival had died down, and Misty was sad to see the wonderful evening come to an end. Tori had to stay and clean up the shelter booth, and Misty and Brice stayed to help. By the time everything was cleaned up and the remaining dogs were taken back to the shelter, it was after ten o’clock and the park was empty.

Saying her goodbyes, Misty loaded Wally up into her car and headed home. She’d thought that he would be exhausted after such an eventful day, but with bright eyes, he sat up in the back seat with his enormous head hanging happily from the open window and his tail bumping the console as it wagged back and forth.

The night was dark, and when Misty turned down her road, she noticed that a truck turned in behind her. Glancing in her rearview mirror, Misty tried to see who it was, but the headlights were too bright and she immediately began to feel concerned. Who would be coming to her house at such a late hour? It had to be the same man that threatened her before, and with trembling fingers, Misty reached into the glove department and pulled out the Taser gun.

Pulling up in front of her house, Misty parked and got out, clutching the weapon in her hand as the truck’s headlights swept over her. Should she grab Wally and run inside? Even if she was able to get into her house, a simple lock on the door wouldn’t keep a man out, and Misty had the sudden thought that she should call the police. Quickly reaching into her purse, her stomach sank when she realized she’d left her phone in the house.

Wally barked, and Misty opened the back door, clutching his leash as he bounded out. Perhaps whoever it was would think twice when he saw the massive dog, as well as the Taser gun she held in her hand. Her heart pounding, she stood there and waited, her body trembling as fear and adrenaline rushed through her veins.

The truck parked, and Misty saw the driver’s door swing open. A shadow began moving toward her, but Misty stood her ground, ready to fight for her life at any given moment.

“Where is your phone?” a familiar voice called out. “I’ve been calling it ever since we left the park.”

“Brice, for Pete’s sake,” Misty breathed as she sank back against her car in relief. “You scared me half to death. My phone is inside; I forgot to take it with me.”

“I’m sorry I scared you,” he said as he came to stand before her. Reaching down to rub Wally behind the ears, he explained, “I wanted to ask if you’d like to come with me for a late night ride; there’s something I want to show you.”

Looking at him quizzically, Misty asked, “What do you want to show me?”

Grinning mysteriously, he said, “It’s a surprise. Come on, it’ll be fun; you can even bring old Wally here with you.
